Description
Size: 45 cm.

Color: Brownish, becoming golden below, fins darkest externally.

Elongate, dorsal and ventral profile slightly arched, height 4 to 4 4/5 in length, head 3 1/2 to 3 2/3, evenly ascending to dorsal. Eye situated in anterior third of head, its lower margin above horizontal through commencement of gape of mouth, its upper margin close to dorsal profile of head, 4 1/4 to 5 4/5 in head, 1 to 1 2/5 in broadly convex inter orbital space, 1 1/3 to 1 3/5 in bluntly rounded snout, which goes 3 3/5 to 4 in head, not overhangs jaw and without open pores. Mouth terminal, oblique, upper jaw reaches opposite hind eye edge in young, a little beyond with age, lower jaw slightly shorter than upper, a pair of pores and a pair of short slits on chin. Preopercle with a few widely separated serrations, most apparent at its rounded angle. Opercle with two obtuse points, post temporal fimbriate along its free edge. Teeth in narrow villiform bands in jaws, upper outer row of strong well-spaced canines, 4 of which show when mouth closes and an inner row of small canines. Spinous dorsal well separated from soft, its base slightly more than twice in base of latter, spines week, having filamentous terminations, 3rd to 6th of somewhat the same length, longest and about 4/9 height of body. Soft dorsal highest in last third, where it equals or exceeds spinous dorsal. Pectorals as long as head behind middle of eye, ventrals only reach one third of distance to vent. anal spines weak and short, the second 1/3 of length of rays, length of base of fin 2/11 or 1/6 of that of soft dorsal. Caudal pointed, least depth of caudal peduncle 3 3/5 to 3 2/3 in head. Scales rather oval, cycloid and transversely elongated on head, ctenoid and vertically elongated on body, a few very fine ones over base of soft dorsal and anal, lateral line gently curved to below first fourth of soft dorsal, where it becomes straight.
