Size: 45 cm.

Color: Grayish above, silvery below, irregular rows of dark unequal spots, usually about the size of the eye, on back, sides, sometimes also on soft dorsal and caudal, fins yellowish.

Elongate, not much compressed, height 4.4-5.50 in length, head 3.50-4, pointed, depressed, rostro-dorsal profile slightly ascending with a depression behind front. Eye 6-7 in head, 1.2-1.6 in slightly convex inter orbital space, its diameter equal to or somewhat shorter than snout, situated in anterior half of head. Nostrils two approximate vertical slits, the posterior close to eye, the anterior narrow, with a rim. Cleft of mouth oblique, upper jaw reaching to below middle of pupil, upper border of maxilla concealed below sub orbitals, distally rounded, mandible longer, prominent, With or without two pores at symphysis. Snout with three pores, its free border entire. Teeth in upper jaw pluriseriate, the inner series with close-set minute teeth, the outer with distant conical teeth and one or two canines on each side, mandibulary with a single series of distant unequal conical teeth and a pair of curved symphysial canines. Preopercle weakly denticulate, opercle with two flat weak spines. Scales cycloid, small, irregular rows, lateral line slightly curved, the sensory tubes simple. Spinous dorsal somewhat triangular, the third and fourth spine being the highest, equal to half height of body or much less in adult, the spines slender, deeply separated from soft part, the base of which is about twice longer than that of spinous part, but much lower than that. Anal rounded, twice or less lower than height of body and about twice shorter than soft dorsal, its origin behind middle of soft dorsal, the two spines slender, flexible, the second longer than eye, the first shorter. Pectorals acutely rounded, equal to head without snout, ventrals shorter, caudal somewhat cuneiform, least height of its peduncle about twice diameter of eye.
