Size: Max length 55.0 cm TL (male/unsexed)

Color: Oliver-grey, the head glossed with purple, a large black blotch bordered in front with yellow at the upper angle of the operculum. Pectorals yellow, as also the basal half of the ventrals, the distal half black with a white edge. Other fins stained with blackish and having fine deep brown dots.

Body oblong and compressed. Height 3-3 1/3, head 3 3/4-4 in total length. Eye 3 1/2-4, equal to snout and 1 1/4 in inter orbital space. Teeth in villiform bands in jaws, the outer row slightly enlarged, no canines. Dorsal fin with 12 spines and 15 to 17 soft rays; fourth dorsal spine the highest. Pectorals nearly as long as head. Anal fin with 3 spines and 11 or 12 soft rays; second anal spine strongest and nearly as long as the third. Caudal fin emarginate. Scales moderate, ctenoid.
