Size: Maximum 30 cm; common to 20 cm

Color: Yellowish or silvery, back greenish-brown, in adult with 6-7 oblong or roundish black blotches of unequal size in an irregular longitudinal series from eye to end of dorsal above lateral line. Usually four larger ones correspond to the triangular blotches of Toxotes jaculator, the coloration of which is repeated in the juvenile Toxotes chatareus, but later on reduced to the definite oval or roundish spots, while usually three smaller spots are intercalated, soft dorsal at its anterior and posterior angel and the outer half of the anal blackish.

Oblong, anteriorly pointed, posteriorly somewhat elevated, its greatest height between origin of dorsal and anal, 2.3 to 2.4 in length, nearly 3 in length with caudal. Head 2.7 in length, 3.3 in length with caudal. Rostro-dorsal profile nearly straight, at most with a slight concavity above the eyes, very broad and flattened. Eye less than 4 in head, equal to or slightly longer than pointed snout, shorter than inter orbital space, 26-28 scales between posterior nostrils and origin of dorsal. Lateral line with an inflection directed upwards, terminating below origin of dorsal spine. Base of dorsal and anal of equal length. Origin of dorsal slightly before that of anal, situated about in the middle of end of snout and of end of caudal. Third and fourth dorsal spine sub equal, the longer nearly equal to head without snout, fifth spine shorter, but slightly higher than soft dorsal, the margin of which is truncate. Anal rounded, its third spine the longest. Caudal slightly emarginate. Pectorals longer than head without snout, ventrals about twice shorter.

Remarks: values in above description denote proportions.
