Description
Size: 100 mm.

Color: Pattern quite different below or above about 100 mm length, with transitional stages. In the definite pattern the general color is purplish brown with a black patch above pectoral extending on chest and throat, from this black area numerous yellow bands run obliquely upwards to dorsal fin and backwards to tail and anal, in adult a brownish band originates on inter orbital space, crosses eye and curves down along preopercular border to angular spine, anal with longitudinal bands, caudal and paired fins yellowish. The about 25 yellow bands may be reduced to about 15 in younger specimens, who have a network of blue lines on anal and bluish lines on head and chest.

Oval, rather robust, height in adult 1.6-1.8, head 3.6-4 in length, rostro-dorsal profile slightly convex, in full grown examples somewhat concave to straight before eye. Eye 3.6-4 in middle of head, far above horizontal gape of mouth, equal to , in adult much smaller than broadly convex interorbital space and likewise to blunt snout. Posterior nostril oval, slightly larger than round anterior. Preoperculum finely serrate, the angular spine somewhat shorter or much longer than eye, according to age (and sex?) inter and suboperculum entire. Scales on trunk moderate, rounded, in anterior part of trunk in old specimens mixt with a few irregular smaller ones, no true basal auxiliaries present, the longitudinal series irregularly arranged, the vertical ones more regularly, on head minute, badly discernible to velvety, lateral line strongly arched, complete. Spinous dorsal about 2/5 longer than soft, the spines graduate, the last 1.5-1.7 in head, soft dorsal rounded, in old somewhat acutely produced, soft anal rounded, its third spine about equal to head without snout. Pectorals slightly shorter than head to equal, ventrals longer, the first ray being prolonged and nearly reaching anal, its spine longer or shorter than head. Caudal convex, least height of its peduncle 2-2.5 in head.

Remarks: Values in above description denote proportions.
