Size: 180 mm.

Color: In alcohol specimens almost uniformly yellowish, lighter below, more grayish above, anterior part of back with about five oblique dark bars ascending towards spinous dorsal and continued by much shorter ones along soft dorsal, they are met at right angles by ten similar bars, ascending parallel from belly and anal upwards, a black ocular band running from front to isthmus, narrower than eye above it, much wider below it, dorsal filament and border of soft dorsal with a black margin, inward with a more or less developed oval black patch (setifer) usually wanting in specimens from Red Sea. Blackish intra marginal lines on caudal.

Orbicular, strongly compressed, rostro-dorsal profile concave till above eye, thence ascending in a nearly straight line to dorsal, height 1.6 to nearly twice, head 2.5-3 in length. Eye in middle of length of head, 3 to nearly 4 in that length, a little greater to about equal to convex interior space, shorter, to one third shorter than pointed, straight, prominent snout which goes 2.3-2.6 in head. Jaws equal, gape of mouth rather small, about horizontal, teeth conspicuous, laterally reaching behind gape. Preoperculum rounded, finely serrated. Scales on sides below lateral line in regular very oblique series, large, rhombic, those above lateral line somewhat smaller, rounded, much smaller on head, chest, caudal peduncle and median fins, lateral line strongly and somewhat angularly arched, terminating near last dorsal ray, Spinous dorsal about one third longer than soft, its spines increase in height posteriorly, the first goes nearly thrice, the last 1.6 in head. Fifth or sixth dorsal ray in adult produced into a filiform thread, increasing in length with age and wanting in young specimens, the following part of the rayed dorsal rounded, anal somewhat pointedly rounded, the spines strong, second and third sub equal 1.5 to 1.8 in length of head. Pectorals shorter than head, ventrals angulate, about 1.8 in head. Caudal broadly convex, least height of its peduncle more than diameter of eye.
