Description
Size: 165 mm.

Color: In alcohol black brown with usually an anterior larger and a posterior smaller round spot, head and lower surface grayish or whitish. Each series of scales on trunk with a median brown band, continuous or formed by separate dots, a brown, yellow edged ocular band from front to chest, narrower than eye, median fins light-brownish, with a darker submarginal narrow band, caudal with a broad transparent border, caudal peduncle at base with a dark dorsal and ventral patch, in young often completed to a broad ring. Paired fins yellow.

Compressed, oval, dorsal and ventral profile nearly equally convex, rostro-frontal profile somewhat concave before eye thence gradually passing over in convexity of back, height 1.6-1.7, head 2.6-3.5 in length. Eye 2.6-3.5 in head, situated in its anterior half, equal to or somewhat smaller than convex inter orbital space and equal to or a little shorter than conical snout. Preoperculum scarcely serrate. Anterior scales of trunk rather large nearly equal to posterior part, ascending in oblique series towards tail, diminishing in size on head and median fins, lateral line runs in a straight line towards posterior third of spinous dorsal thence curves down till below posterior third of soft dorsal. Fifth and sixth dorsal spines the highest, 1.3 in head, the three ultimate equal and as high as rounded soft dorsal, which is about as long as spinous dorsal without the four anterior spines, membrane between spines deeply incised, anal rounded, its median spine the strongest and longest, about as long as head without snout. Pectorals and ventrals of about same size, scarcely shorter than head, spine of ventrals 1.3-1.4 in head. Caudal truncate, least height of its peduncle about as long as diameter of eye.

Remarks: Values in above description denote proportions.
