Size: 200 mm.

Color: Ground color in alcohol specimens yellowish brown, a dark brown ocular band, much broader than eye, reaching border of preoperculum and united with its fellow on inter orbital space, behind it the head is covered by a white or margaritaceous band, behind head from pectoral to about penultimate and ultimate dorsal spine a large triangular patch, from which is separated a dark small yellow band along base of anterior dorsal spine and a similar large dark brown band beginning at scapular region, continued along base of dorsal and terminating on base of caudal peduncle, broadest on both extremities, the remaining part of the trunk shows oblique brownish parallel bands running downwards and forwards, dorsal and anal with a black margin and a submarginal pale band, caudal with an intra marginal black band. This complicated adult adult color pattern is preceded by a much simpler one in the Tholichthys stage, characterized besides by a broad ocular band, by a round white-edged black ocellus in soft anal, more conspicuous in specimens of about 60 mm length, with a dark spot on caudal peduncle, which induced to create Ch. biocellatus.

Oval, with elevated back, ventral profile less so, rostro-dorsal profile in adult concave, abruptly elevated before dorsal, height 1.4-1.7, head 2.5-3.1 in length. Eye 2.5-3.3 in head, situated in middle of length of head, slightly shorter than convex inter orbital space. Snout protruding, longer than eye, lips somewhat swollen, gape of mouth horizontal, jaws nearly even, with rather broad series of setiform teeth, the mandibulary ones somewhat longer. Scales large, getting gradually smaller behind middle of trunk, much smaller on head and towards median fins, arranged on trunk in somewhat irregular slightly ascending longitudinal series, lateral line strongly arched, terminating some scales before end of dorsal. Spinous dorsal somewhat longer than soft, its spines rather strong, heteracanth, the anterior gradually increasing in height till the fourth, the following nearly subequal, the last longer than half head, anterior rays of soft anal of same height, successively increasing in height till about last third of fin whence it has an angularly rounded form, likewise the anal, which has three strong spines, the median the longest, about half length of head. Pectorals rounded, somewhat shorter than head, ventrals acute, slightly shorter, reaching vent, their spine strong, about to head without snout. Caudal convex, its peduncle very short and broad, its least height much less than diameter of eye.

Remarks: Values in above description denote proportions.
