Description
Color: Blackish purple

Plants to 15 cm tall, texture rather soft; arising from a creeping base. Erect filaments subdichotomously branched below, alternately branched above, sometimes with numerous subsimple coarse rhizoids, the segments to 90 µ diameter below, 1.5-2.3(-8.0) diameters long, with 4 pericentral cells, ecorticate; ordinary branching erect, wandlike to clustered. Adventitious branchlets not numerous; above the branchlets 33-45 µ diameter, the segments to 130 µ, usually about 1.5 diameters, long. Apical cells conspicuous; simple or sparingly forked trichoblasts sometimes present, rather persistent, lateral branches replacing certain of these in development from the apex. Tetrasporangia seriate in the branches near the central portions of the plant.
