Color: Dark purple red

Thalli erect, 1-2 cm high, 5-10 mm long stalk, vesicles 3-8 mm long, 2.5-7 mm in diameter; consisting of 2-3 hollow vesicles from a single or branched, cylindrical and solid stalk, disc-like holdfast. Erect shoots terete, thin, tough. Stem solid, simple or branched, branching irregularly alternate or dichotomous, thus resulting in plants being simple or sparsely tufted. Branches ending in vesicular structures, up to 15 or more vesicles. Vesicles oval or pyriform in shape, vesicle wall consisting of at least 3-5 cell layers, the outer of small cells, continuous, covering the large colorless inner wall cells. Cavity filled with slimy clear thick mucilage. Gland cells grouping in 6-8 on innermost layer of the membrane of the vesicles. Tetrasporangia spherical to ellipsoidal 22-33 µ X 19-22 µ occurring in the wall layers of vesicles.
