Description
Size: 12 cm.

Color: Dark brown, paler on head and chest, an ocular band curves from the two anterior dorsal spines to base of ventral, before it a frontal stripe comprising snout, behind it a third narrow band from spinous dorsal across operculum to belly. Sides of body with alternating, angularly bent dark brown and whitish bands, more diffuse on posterior part of body, soft dorsal and anal dark brown, outwards reddish, as also caudal peduncle, their margin lighter with a submarginal dark line, caudal blackish encircle by yellow, pectorals and ventrals whitish. In two color varieties from the Red Sea: only the ocular band is present in G. triangulum var. karraf C.V., while otherwise the greater part of head and chest is brownish red, in var. larvatus Ehrenberg only the las named color is present and even the ocular band is wanting.

Height 1.25-1.4, head 3-3.5 in length, head slightly shorter than high, rostro-dorsal profile steeply ascending with a concavity before eye. Eye 2.7 to more than 3, equal to or slightly longer than snout and somewhat greater than convex interorbital space, preoperculum indistinctly denticulate. Spinous dorsal slightly longer than soft, last spine subsequal to head without snout, about sixth, seventh and eighth ray forming a rounded angel on border of fin, the highest equal to head or even longer. Last anal spine longest, nearly equal to last dorsal spine, soft anal somewhat less elevated, rounded. Pectorals pointed, nearly equal to head, ventrals acute, the first prolonged ray nearly reaching anal, its spine about equal to head without snout. Caudal truncate or slightly convex. least height of its strongly compressed peduncle equal to eye. For other characters see diagnosis of genus.
