Description
Size: Apical axis 10-110 μm.

Color: Yellow brown.

Individual cells are united by their ends into stellate and/or zig-zag shaped colonies. Both forms can be present in the same colony. In valve view cells have almost parallel sides. Valves are isopolar with blunt-rounded ends. An important diagnostic feature are the marginal areolae which open into depressions in the valve face and valve mantle. In SEMs three-pronged struts are visible surmounting the areolae externally. Between the rows of areolae an unperforated axial area is located. One labiate process, visible from the inside of the cell, is located at each pole. Externally the labiate process is visible as as a circular hole in the valve face.

Reproduction is general for group: both sexual and asexual.
