Description
Size: 30 cm.

Color: Grayish or brownish above, lighter below, a yellow band from eye to caudal, touching lateral line, fins yellowish-hyaline, in life often with red spots on side of head.

Oblong, slender, compressed, greatest depth below anterior part of first dorsal, 3.5 to 4 in length, head 3.2 to 3.6, much longer than deep, its rostro-dorsal profile more or less convex, straight above eyes. Eye 3.5 to nearly 4 in head, nearer to hind margin of operculum than to end of snout, snout in young equal to it, in adult nearly twice longer, flat inter orbital space much broader than eye. Maxillary not reaching front border of eye, mouth small, oblique, the mandible slightly included, operculum with a small flat spine, barbels extending to hind margin of praeoperculum. Teeth in jaws in villi form bands, posteriorly in a single row. Gillrakers about 15 and some rudimentary ones on lower branch of first branchial arch. Scales finely ctenoid, somewhat caducous, wanting on top of snout. Spinous dorsal high, first spine minute or obsolete, second and third spines subequal 1.4 t o1.5 in head, second dorsal and anal concave, subequal, about twice lower than depth of body. Pectorals as long as ventrals, about equal to longest dorsal spine.
