Plant mass consisting of parallel filaments associated in fragile, rather tough membranous expansions, deep blue-green or blackish olive-green when broken up in flakes, vividly virdigris green in fresh state, filaments straight or more or less curved, parallel or interlaced. Trichomes rarely tapering not capitates. Apical cell rounded or somewhat conical, not constricted at the joints. Cells 2-6 μm wide, nearly always longer than broad, 7-10 μm long, sometimes about 13 μm long, rarely 4 μm long. Transverse walls distantly marked by two refringent protoplasmic granules irregularly placed on either side. Cell contents granular, blue-green.
