Description
Plants dioecious. Rhizomes creeping, branched, often moniliferous, flexible, white to pale brown; internodes upto 2.6 cm long; roots 1-7 at each node, slender, unbranched, white. Shoots upto 15 cm long, erect, branched or unbranched, bearing 2-3 leaves at each branch; stems upto 4.2 cm with 1-7 mm long internodes; scales linear-oblong, subtruncate at base, acute to obtuse or rarely oblique at apex, scarious, convolute, entire along margins, with many vertical discontinuous tannin dashes; leaf sheaths linear, convolute, transparent with numerous reddish tannin streaks, persisting longer than leaf blades; lamina linear, narrowed at base, entire along margins.
Male flowers 2, subequal, dorsally connate at stalk-apices; stalks slender, terete, white; anthers oblongoid, white when young, brown when mature; upper anther ca 4 mm long, lower anther ca 3 mm long with numerous vertical reddish-brown tannin dashes, dehiscing longitudinally. Female flowers sessile, enclosed by leafy sheaths; ovaries ovoid; styles terete, unequal, filiform, terminal or subterminal, lateral in fruits; fruits globose to subglobose or ovoid, mostly in pairs, rarely with aborted ovary with persistent lateral styles; testa hard, stony, smooth with tannin mosaics. Flowering and fruiting from March to July.
