Color: Bluish above, yellowish-white below, the young with 5-7 dark crossbars, one below spinous dorsal, which fin is black, the following three entering soft dorsal, they have an anterior direction above, a somewhat posterior direction below lateral line, soft dorsal dusky with the elevated portion black with a white tip, ventral and anal black, caudal yellow, the lobes dark in young.

Oblong, somewhat compressed, with rounded abdomen, height 2.75 to more than 3 in length, diminishing relatively with age, as also some other proportions change. Eye 4-4.5 in young, somewhat shorter in old, equal to snout. Maxillary posteriorly broadened, about to half diameter of eye, extending to posterior third of eye. Praeorbital anteriorly and posteriorly of about equal height, which equals almost that of hind border of maxillary. Gillrakers 8-9, on lower part of first branchial arch, short, which may get knob like and rudimentary. Bands of villi form teeth in jaws, equally broad anteriorly. Similar teeth in a pyriform patch on vomer, in a band on palatines, in changing distribution on tongue. Scales minute, rudimentary, more conspicuous on posterior part of body, lateral line slightly arched anteriorly, without scutes, in old specimens with a low keel on caudal peduncle. Spinous dorsal short and low, twice its own length distant from soft dorsal, the anterior rays of which are elevated but not falcate. Anal of similar form but shorter and lower, its two preceding spines very small, one or both obsolete in adult. Pectorals pointed, about two third of length of head. Ventrals with an outward and inward membrane connected with the abdominal skin, longer than pectorals, in young equal to head and nearly reaching vent, in adult not so far and shorter than head. Caudal incised, with convex acute lobes.

Remarks: Values in above description denote proportions.
