Size: 50 cm.

Color: Bluish above, silvery below, with a series of 5-8 oval or vertically oblong blackish or dusky blotches, the anterior of which intersected by the lateral line, the posterior lying above it, they may be indistinct, soft dorsal with a black tip.

Compressed, oblong-elongate, height equal to or somewhat more than length of head, which goes about 4.5 in length, has a concave frontal profile and is longer than high. Dorsal profile of body rather more convex than the ventral. Eye 4.5 to more than 5 in head, somewhat less than pointed snout. Cleft of mouth commences opposite middle of eye, lower jaw somewhat longer, the upper extending to below center of eye or hind margin of pupil, maxillary expanded behind and somewhat truncate. Teeth in upper jaw with a small band of villi form teeth anteriorly and with an outer series of somewhat larger ones, the most anterior in young canine like, lower jaw with two rows, the outer somewhat enlarged, the most anterior in young canine-like, vomer with an elongated oval patch, a longitudinal pyriform band on palatines, continued on pterygoids, present also on tongue. Scales linear, needle-like, giving the skin a striated or leather-like appearance, lateral line indistinct, almost straight, with a slight angular elevation above last third of pectoral. Anterior elevation of soft dorsal and anal moderate, that of the first more than twice in height of body, that of anal less. Pectorals somewhat shorter than head without snout, ventrals subequal. Caudal deeply forked, with long, acute lobes.
