Description
Size: 45 cm.

Color: Grayish above, silvery below, 4-8 vertically oblong dark blotches touching lateral lines above or usually intersected by it. Vertical fins darkish, without black blotches anteriorly.

Nearly ovate, height somewhat more than thrice in length, much more than length of head. Eye 4-4 1/2 in head, in young longer than, later on equal to or slightly shorter than obtuse snout. Maxillary extending in young to hind border of eye, in adult some what surpassing it. Cleft of mouth opposite upper third of eye. Scales small but distinct, their exposed part lanceolate, lateral line angularly raised below anterior part of spinous dorsal, furtheron straight. Teeth in upper jaw in a single, in the lower in two series, the outer directed somewhat outwards, with two caniniform teeth on either side of symphysis. Villi form teeth in a triangular patch on vomer, in a longitudinal band on palatines, pterygoids and tongue. Elevation of anterior dorsal and anal rays equal to half height of body. Pectorals shorter than head, ventrals equal to head.
