Size: 30 cm.

Color: Bluish above, silvery below, usually in adult a double series of dusky roundish blotches above and below lateral line, which may be transversely connected. Tips of dorsal and anal black.

Compressed, oblong-elongate, height moderately more than length of head, which goes 4.25-4.50 in length and has its rostro-nuchal profile slightly concave above eyes. Eye 4-4.50. in anterior part of head. Its diameter equal to or longer than pointed snout. Lower jaw somewhat prominent, maxillary obliquely truncate, posteriorly extending to posterior third or almost hind margin of eye. Cleft of mouth a little oblique, commences opposite middle of eye. Teeth in upper jaw in a short villi form band anteriorly, in a single or two series posteriorly, the outer of which has larger teeth which may be continued till near symphysis, in lower jaw in two series, on vomer in a rhombic patch with rounded angles, posteriorly more or less prolonged, in palatines, pterygoids and tongue in young, the outer series has near upper and lower symphysis 1 or 2 canine like teeth. Scales rather conspicuous, rhombic, pointed, in their exposed part somewhat excavated and more than twice longer than broad, lateral line anteriorly somewhat angulated becoming straight below anterior fourth of soft dorsal. Dorsal spine overlapping. Anterior dorsal rays elevated, the longest about twice in head, anal similar but slightly lower. Pectorals twice in head, ventrals somewhat shorter, reaching vent. Caudal deeply forked with equal lobes.
