Plants dioecious. Rhizomes slender, fleshy, transparent. Internodes upto 2.6 cm long, 0.5-1.5 mm thick. Roots solitary at each node with soft root hairs. Scales 2, the scale covering the base of the petioles ovate to oblong, subtruncate at base, retuse at apex, convolute, entire along margins, transparent; the scale embracing the rhizomes oblong, truncate at base, retuse at apex, convolute, entire along margins, hyaline. Leaves glabrous, paired at each node. Petioles fleshy, transparent, each pair subequal. Lamina oblong, rarely elliptic, cuneate to attenuate and asymmetric at base, acute at apex, entire along margins.
Flowers solitary, axillary, dioecious, subtended by 2 subequal spathes. Male flowers ca 3 cm long, spathes ovate-lanceolate, acuminate at apex, convolute, hyaline. Tepals 3, ovate-oblong, mucronate at apex, concave, convolute, entire. Brownish without, whitish within. Stamens 3, brownish. Filaments minute. Anther lobes oblongoid, connective tissue thick, brown. Pollen grains variable in shape, mostly elliptic, contained in a mucilage sheath. Female flowers subsessile or sessile. Spathes lanceolate, truncate at base, acuminate at apex, convolute, entire along margins. Ovary ellipsoid to ovoid, whitish. Styles 3, unequal, all inserted at the same point at a distance of ca 7 mm from the tip of the ovary, papillose adaxially, smooth abaxially.
Fruits ovoid. Hypanthium 4-5 mm long, persistent. Pericarp translucent, scarious. Seeds globose, in viscous fluid, normally 6-12 (-18) in number, bluntly beaked at both ends. Testa reticulate, grayish white. Embryo globose, white. Cotyledon spirally coiled on the upper side. Flowering and fruiting almost throughout the year.
