Color: Bluish above, silvery on sides and below, immature with five to seven transverse dark bands on sides of body and root of caudal.

Much compressed, rhombic, angular, elevated, more so in young, height 1.2 to nearly 2 in length. Head 2.5 to about 3 in length, its rostro-dorsal profile steep till eye, thence ascending in an oblique line till dorsal fin, producing a supraoccipital gibbosity, more pronounced in old specimens. Eye according to size 2.5 to more than 3.5, height of praeorbital less than diameter of eye. Snout rather short, rounded, chin prominent, gape of mouth getting less oblique with age. Maxillary extending to or somewhat beyond front border of pupil. Anterior part of lateral line arched, becoming straight about 10th dorsal ray, the straight part about equal to curved part, with 10-15 feeble scutes posteriorly. The anterior six or seven rays of soft dorsal and the anterior four or five anal rays exceedingly produced into filaments, becoming some what shorter with age, but surpassing the caudal, the following rays of equal length, the basal sheath of both fins little developed. Pectorals falcate, their length exceeding in adult that head. Ventrals in young with the four outer rays gradually filiform, reaching anterior third of anal, in adult not reaching anal.
