Description
Size: 16 cm.

Color: Greenish above, silvery below, in fresh state, according to Bleeker and day with a broad, golden oculo-caudal band, a distinct black opercular spot encroaching on shoulder, fins hyaline.

Oblong, elongate, compressed, ventral profile till anal less convex than dorsal, otherwise both profiles nearly equally curved, height 3.2-3.5 in length. Head pointed, 3.4-3.5 in length, longer than high, its rostro-frontal profile nearly straight with a shallow impression above nostrils. Eye 3.2 to more than 3.5 in head, with a broad posterior and a narrower anterior adipose eyelid, the former reaching on pupil, situated, in middle of head, its diameter about equal to snout, 2/3 longer than height of praeorbital posteriorly. Lower jaw slightly prominent, the upper terminating below front border of eye or somewhat behind it, much protractile into a horizontal tube. Minute teeth in a single series on lower jaw and more or less in a rudimentary state on tongue, wanting on upper jaw, vomer and palatines. 26 Gillrakers, finely tuberculated, the longest more than half diameter of eye. Small but conspicuous scales on body, also on breast, present on cheeks, praeoperculum, top of operculum and on temporal and occipital region. Lateral line scarcely arched, with rounded sensory scales becoming straight below tenth dorsal ray, the straight portion nearly one third shorter than the anterior, the scales becoming more shield-like in the posterior third, the hinder most scarcely armed, the broadest about 12-14 times in height of body. Anterior dorsal spines, about half height of body, their height, equaling about that of slightly elevated anterior rays of soft dorsal and anal, both fins with a scaly basal sheath, caudal forked, lobes equal, pectorals falcate, in adult longer than head, ventrals half length of head.
