Size: 31.5 cm.

Color: Dusky-greyish above, silvery below, fins dusky, blackish in young, A diffused opercular spot.

Compressed, oval, dorsal profile regularly convex, ventral profile less so, somewhat declivous till anal, height 2-2.04 in length, head elevated 3-3.08 in length, about as long as high. Eye 4.5 to more than 5 in head, situated above longitudinal axis of body, about twice its diameter distant from end of blunt snout, its diameter is less than trenchant interorbital space, the cleft of mouth commences below level of eye, it is slightly oblique. Adipose eyelid more or less rudimentary. Lower jaw slightly longer, maxilla reaches somewhat behind front border of eye. Minute teeth in jaws in rather broad bands, in triangular patch on vomer, in longitudinal band on palatines, none on tongue (after Sauvage also on tongue). Cheeks, temporal region and upper part of opercles scaled, breast naked as in malabaricus. Anterior part of lateral line curved parallel to dorsal profile, becoming straight below 13th dorsal ray, the curved portion much longer than the straight portion, which has 23 to 26 feebly developed keeled scutes, only the most posterior are more conspicuously armed. On the lower part of the anterior arch are 15 to 16 long and slender gillrakers. Spinous dorsal small, the five or six anterior dorsal rays elevated into a falcate lobe, about half height of body, anal of similar form, caudal deeply forked, with equal lobes. Pectorals falcate, much longer than head, ventrals about as long as snout.
