Description
Size: 50 cm.

Color: Greyish above, silvery below, an opercular dark spot present, a few yellow spots, differently dispersed, on sides, fins yellowish, lobe and margin of soft dorsal and margin of caudal blackish, pectorals and ventrals hyaline.

Oblong, compressed, dorsal profile from tip of snout to caudal peduncle evenly convex, ventral profile less so till anal, whence it curves to caudal peduncle, height 2.4-2.7 in length. Head 3.4-3.6, as high as long, the nape trenchant, usually a shallow depression on front. Eye 3.5-4.5 in head, its major part before middle of head and above longitudinal axis of body, its diameter shorter than snout and as convex inter orbital space. Maxillary reaching front border of pupil, mouth slightly oblique, jaw equal. Praeorbital posteriorly half diameter of eye. Bands of small villiform teeth on jaw, vomer, palatines and tongue, the outer in jaws somewhat larger and unequal. Naked area of breast reaching to about upper third of the distance between ventral profile and base of pectoral and extends with a point nearly to ventral. Anterior part of lateral line runs in a very flat arch or in a nearly straight, slightly undulating line to below middle of soft dorsal, whence it is continued, without sharp distinction, as posterior straight part, which carries about 25 keeled scutes, commencing below posterior third of soft dorsal. Spinous dorsal weak and very low, soft dorsal with even rays, slightly lower than eye, but the 6 or 7 anterior rays forming an elevated falcate lobe, the longest anterior ray sometimes produced into a kind of filment, longer than half height of body. Soft anal of similar construction but the anterior lobe lower. Pectorals falcate with strongly narrowed tip, longer than head, ventrals more than twice in head. Caudal forked with somewhat rounded lobes.

Remarks: Values in above description denote proportions.
