Description
Size: 27 cm.

Color: Slaty above, with indications of darker transverse bands, silvery or whitish below, a large dark blotch on opercle and upper part of shoulder girdle.

Oblong compressed, dorsal and ventral profile equally convex, belly not carinate. Height about 3.5 in length, head somewhat shorter, acute longer than hight, its rostro-frontal line declivous and somewhat convex. Eye 3.5-4 in head, situated for the greatest part in its anterior half, adipose eyelids extending on pupil, interorbital space somewhat more. Snout equal to or longer than eye, rather pointed. Lower jaw prominent, maxillary terminating in young before, in old below anterior border of eye. Small, conspicuous teeth in jaws, in a single series, or the upper anterior ones in a narrow band, villiform on vomer and in a band on palatines and tongue. Breast totally scaled, also scales on cheeks and superior part of opercles. Lateral line anteriorly weakly arched, terminating below about 6th to 8th dorsal ray, where from begins the straight portion of nearly equal length, with 40-45 scutes, increasing in size posteriorly, the posterior strongly armed, 6-7 times in height of body. Dorsal fins of equal height, ore than twice lower than body, but higher than anal, anterior dorsal and anal rays not much elevated, last dorsal and anal ray longer than the preceding and finlet-like. Spinous dorsal with a low basal scaly sheath, which is well developed on soft dorsal scaly sheath, which is well developed on soft dorsal and anal. Pectorals falcate, longer than head, reaching origin of soft anal. Ventrals twice shorter than head. Caudal with acute lobes, equal, about 5 times in length.
