Size: 75-80 cm.

Color: Several color phases with age and sex. Basic color pattern changes little with growth although the posterior most white bands disappear on large individuals.

Height 2.6, 3.1-3.2 in length with caudal. Head 2.6-2.8, 3.1-3.4 in length with caudal. Height of head 1.2 in its length. Eye 7-7.6, 2.6-3.8 in snout and 1.6-1.7 in flat or even somewhat concave inter orbital space. Mouth small, horizontal. Maxillary by far not reaching to below anterior nostril. Teeth compressed, rounded at top, in one series in the jaws, followed on the lingual side by some round molari form teeth. Anteriorly in both jaws two almost horizontal canines, those of the upper jaw longer than those of the lower jaw. Lower and posterior part of cheeks with 2 or 3 rows of thin scales imbedded in the skin. Posterior and inferior preopercular limb naked. 16-17 rows of scales before dorsal, the anterior ones small, thin and more or less imbedded in the skin. Dorsal spines slender, but stiff and pungent, the first shorter than eye, the last equal to distance between posterior border of eye and posterior nostril. Soft dorsal higher than spinous part, the longest ray more than twice eye. First anal spine minute, third longest slightly longer than last dorsal spine. Soft anal as deep as soft dorsal. Pectorals about equal to snout and eye, ventrals pointed, slightly shorter. Caudal truncate or slightly rounded. Lips thick with age. Dorsal spines (total): 9; Dorsal soft rays (total): 10-11; Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 11.
