Description
Size: 41-85 mm

Color: Reddish brown, lighter below. Upper part of head brownish. Scales above lateral line with brownish margin. Opercular margin above and below the opercular spine dark brown. Pectoral axil dark brown. Spinous dorsal dusky with the distal parts black. Soft dorsal and anal dusky anteriorly, lighter posteriorly but the tips of anterior rays black. Caudal dusky, distal portion of the lobes blackish. Ventral pale, tip dusky.

Head 2.7 in standard length, 3.5 in total length. Depth of body 2.3 in standard length, 2.9 in total length. Eye diameter 2.3 in head, about 0.4 in snout and 0.6 in interorbital space. Maxillary reaching past hind border of pupil. Teeth in jaws, biserial. Orbitals and opercular bones serrated. Pectoral fin equal to ventral fin, shorter than head without snout. Third anal spine stronger, but slightly shorter than fourth spine.
Number of spines and rays in the dorsal fin: X, I, 15; number of spines and rays in the anal fin: IV, 13; number of rays in the pectoral fin: ii, 14; number of spines and rays in the ventral fins: I, 7; number of scale rows along the lateral line: 28; number of horizontal scale rows usually counted from origin of the dorsal fin to the lateral line and from anal origin to the lateral line: 3+1+6.
