Description
Size: 54 cm.
Color: In alcohol specimens light reddish brown, with meshwork of darker brown on head and anterior part of back, indistinctly continued as light distant spots here and there on body and on vertical fins, which have a more or less distinct dark border. Often the head and body are uniformly dark brown in alcohol, with or without faint indications of dark lines on the head.
Height 2.9, 2.5-26, 3.1-3.2 in length with caudal. Head 3.1, 3.7-3.8 in length with caudal. Eye 5-6.5, shorter than snout. Interorbital space about four fifths of eye. Lower jaw projecting, mouth rather oblique, maxillary reaching to below posterior border of eye or a little beyond, The width of its distal extremity nearly equalling or exceeding diameter of eye. Prae-operculum very finely and evenly serrated, its angle rounded. Teeth forming rather broad bands, in three to five series on the sides of the mandible, canines moderate or strong. Middle opercular spine nearer lower than upper. Gillrakers 9 or 10 and 5 or 6 rudiments, on lower part of anterior arch, the longest about as long as gill-fringes. Dorsal originating above base of pectorals, spines increasing in length to the third, which is 1/4 to 1/3 length of head, and considerably shorterthan posterior soft rays. Second and third anal spines subequal, as long as or little shorter than longest dorsal spine, 1/2 to 2/3 length of longest soft rays. Pectorals about as long as postorbital part of head, ventrals only a little shorter. Caudal rounded. Scales strongly ciliated.
Remarks: Values in above description denote proportions.
