Size: 23-35 cm.

Color: Brown, irregularly covered with bluish white dots, five darker blotches, the first between eyes, the second on nape and opercle, the fourth and fifth triangular below spinous and soft-rayed portion of dorsal, the fifth just behind it. The bluish white dots also on base of the fins, least or even wanting on spinous dorsal.

Height of body 2 1/4 to 2 1/3, head 2 4/5 to 3 in length. Eye 4 1/2 in head, equal to snout, interorbital space much less. Maxillary extending to below hindborder of eye, the width of its distal extremity equals 2/3 to 3/4 of diameter of eye. Lower jaw prominent with a well-developed dermal appendage at its symphysis, slightly shorter than diameter of eye. Operculum with 3 strong equidistant spines, the middle one the longest, praeoperculum rounded, in the middle of its hindborder with 3-5 spinelike teeth. Origin of dorsal opposite to base of pectorals, its soft-rayed portion obtusely rounded, somewhat higher than longest ray of the spinous portion. Caudal rounded. Pectorals rounded, about equal to postorbital part of head and to ventrals.
Dorsal spines (total): 7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 12 - 13; Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 8. Postlarvae with large white spots, the spots remaining part of the adult pattern, but become obscured with additional small white spots in the grey areas.
