Size: 10 cm.

Color: In preserved specimens yellowish or brownish, more or less silvery on sides of head. Head body more or less densely covered by small black spots (melanophores), which sometimes are arranged in regular rows and are more crowded on caudal peduncle at base of caudal, where they form a more or less developed spot or patch. In some specimens a number of narrow oblique transverse darkbrown bands, corresponding with the rows of scales, are visible. Head sometimes marked with a blackish band from snout to eye, sometimes a black spot above operculum and a dark vertical streak from eye downwards.

Compressed, head blunt, its height about equal to its length. Height 2.4-2.6, 3-3.3 in length with caudal. Head 2.4-2.7, 3.1-3.5 in length with caudal. Eye 2.5-2.9. Snout about two thirds of eye, a little less than interorbital space. Mouth oblique. Maxillary reaching to below middle of eye. Jaws equal. Teeth in a few rows in jaws, some teeth on vomer and a single row in anterior part of palatines. Praeoperculum serrated, especially along the edge and the lower border, where the serrations are coarser. None of the other bones of the head serrated. First dorsal spine about one third or one half of second, which is equal to second anal spine and somewhat shorter than third dorsal spine, this spine is the longest and is equal to spine of second dorsal and to postorbital part of head. Anterior soft rays of dorsal and anal longer than the posterior ones, subequal and about as long as eye and snout. Pectorals as long as head without snout. Ventrals shorter, equal to snout and eye. Caudal incised.
