Description
Size: 16 cm.

Color: In preserved specimens reddish or greenish with light bands along the body, corresponding to the longitudinal rows of scales. Membrane of spinous dorsal blackish, crossed by a white band between the basal part of the anterior spines and a similar band between the upper part of the posterior ones. uppermargin of dorsal sometimes also white. Membrane between third and fourth anal spine darkish.

Oblong, dorsal profile from snout to dorsal with a gentle curve. Height 2.9-3, 3.2-3.6 in length with caudal. Head 3-3.4, 3.6-4 in length with caudal. Eye 2.5-2.8, longer than snout. Interorbital space two thirds of eye. Maxillary not reaching to below middle of eye. Nasalia rounded in front, without spines. Jaws equal in front. No spines at nasal opening. A strong tooth, directed downwards, anteriorly on the praeorbital, followed by a series of smaller but well developed teeth, directed backwards, along the lower border of that bone, similar teeth are present on its median ridge. There is a good deal of variability in the number and the size of these teeth. Postorbital narrow, serrated. Praeopercular spine stout, equal to snout. Two enlarged spines in superior part of operculum, the upper one much longer than the lower one, longer than the praeopercular spine. Eight transverse series of scales on praeoperculum, 7 or 8 between occiput and origin of dorsal. Third to fifth or sixth or fourth to sixth dorsal spines the longest, about equal to snout and eye, last spine the shortest, equal to or longer than half diameter of eye. Membrane between the spines deeply incised. Third anal spine as long as or longer than head without snout. Ventrals longer than pectorals, equal to or longer than head without snout. Ventral spine about equal to snout and eye. Least height of caudal peduncle 1.6 in its length. Color of preserved specimens reddish or greenish with light bands along the body, corresponding to the longitudinal rows of scales. Membrane of spinous dorsal blackish, crossed by a white band between the basal part of the anterior spines and a similar band between the upper part of the posterior ones. Uppermargin of dorsal sometimes also white. Membrane between third and fourth anal spine darkish.
