Size: 16 cm.

Color: In alcohol specimens lighter or darker brownish on right side with darker cloudy patches, not always distinct. The left side is light, marked with rows of dark spots in one specimen. Fins dusky or with black margins. Tip of right pectoral blackish.

Rather elongate. Height 2.3-2.7, 3-3.1 in length with caudal. Head 3.8-4, 4.7-4.9 in length with caudal. Eyes large, 2.5-2.7, above each other or the inferior one more forward than the upper one, almost touching each other. Snout very short, about half diameter of eye. Mouth small, curved, strongly ascending. Maxillary equal to eye, not reaching quite to below middle of eye. Palate toothless. Jaws with bands of small pointed teeth. Dorsal beginning below posterior half of upper eye, ending close to caudal. All rays simple. Anal beginning below middle of pectoral, ending below end of dorsal. Pectoral of left side equal to eye and snout, that of right side somewhat shorter. Ventral of right side equal to pectoral of left side, ventral of left side equal to pectoral of right side. Caudal obtusely pointed. Lateral line only present on right side, abruptly ascending from gillopening, then running horizontally for about 12 scales or more, which part is separated by about 11 scales from dorsal profile and then again descending in an almost vertical direction to middle of side, from where it runs straight to caudal. Both sides of body and head covered by scales, excepting the snout and the maxillaries. They are ctenoid on the colored side, in one specimen cycloid, in the others more or less distinctly ctenoid on the cheeks, cycloid on the blind side. About 10 slender gillrakers on first branchial arch.
