Description
Size: Filaments 11-45 μm in diameter (filaments of indefinite length and extremely variable)

Filaments almost always attached by means of a holdfast. Rhizoids not observed at any stage of development, either in nature or culture. Two types of filaments, one with uniform width and the other with alternately widened and narrowed parts frequently noticed in nature. The widening in the filaments observed at the alternate septa is due to slight bulging on both sides of the filament. However, the bulging is also encountered at every septum or without any definite pattern. Longitudinal walls in between the septum also sometimes seen widened all along the length of filament resulting in filaments with wavy margins. Occasionally young filaments constricted at the septa also noticed. Filaments consisting of extremely short and/or coupled cells, or coupled cells of normal sizes also frequently noticed in nature.

Each cell contains a single more or less spherical nucleus located centrally or near the longitudinal wall. The nuclei range in diameter from 4.0-8.5 µm and encloses a solitary nucleolus.

Asexual reproduction takes place by vegetative fragmentation or by the production of 2-32 quadriflagellate zoospores produced within zoosporangia. The zoospores have a somewhat cup-shaped chloroplast containing 1-3 pyrenoids, a stigma and an anterior nucleus. Zoospores attached to the substratum by their anterior ends and secrete a holdfast upon germination.
