Description
Size (male): 170 cm TL.

Max. weight: 80.0 kg.

Color: Head and body dusky golden dorsally, silver ventrally; larger specimens with small, fine dots on body, head and operculum. Dorsal fins dusky with tip of first ray white, anal fin dusky or yellow with tip of first ray white; in large specimens males markedly darker than females.

Head 3 in standard length, 3.7 in total length. Depth of body 2.3 in standard length, 2.8 in total length. Eye diameter 4.4 in head, 1.3 in snout and 1.2 in interorbital space. Maxillary reaching somewhat to below middle of eye. Teeth villiform in the upper jaw with the outer row enlarged anteriorly; a single row of teeth in lower jaw; villiform teeth present on vomer, palatines and tongue. Breast naked ventrally with a median patch of minute scales before ventral fins. Anterior part of lateral line arched, the arched portion shorter than the straight part with 30 scutes. Pectoral fin falcate, slightly shorter than head.
Number of spines in the first dorsal fin: VIII; number of spines in the second dorsal fin: I, 20; number of spines and rays in the anal fin: II, I, 16-17; number of rays in the pectoral fin: ii, 18; number of spines and rays in the ventral fin: I, 5; number of scale rows along the lateral line: 92; gill raker count: 5+1+15.

Dioecious, external fertilization, nonguarders of eggs, open water/substratum egg scatterers.

Adults usually solitary, and swim over the reef. Juveniles are found in estuaries. Occurs at temperatures ranging from 26 to 29°C. Large individuals may be ciguatoxic.
