Description
Size: Maximum 30 cm; common to 22 cm

Color: A distinctive color pattern of 5 dark bars extending obliquely from the back to the lower part of flanks, and a sixth dark blotch on top of caudal peduncle; first bar broadest, from nape obliquely backwards, lower parts of bars narrower and often discontinuous. Spinous part of dorsal fin black except along base, soft part of dorsal fin with a black margin.

A medium sized species with snout projecting beyond the upper jaw. Mouth is inferior, no barbels. DOB 30-34 %, HL 29-32 %, ED 22-27 %. Teeth differentiated into large and small in both jaws, no canines. Gill rakers 4-9 on lower arm of first arch, IInd AFS strong 8-13 %, caudal fin rhomboid. Dorsal fin with 10 spines. Anal fin with 2 spines and 7 soft rays. The blotches may be broken or entire. Sagitta: oblong, head of tadpole shaped impression roughly triangular, tail broad, curved and ending in a sharp edge. Swim bladder carrot shaped with 19-20 pairs of arborescent appendages, the 1st pair extending into the head, the last 3 pairs branched at the tip.

Remarks: Measurements on Head Length (HL), Depth of body (DOB) and length of IInd Anal fin spine (II AFS.) were converted as % of Standard Length (SL). Eye Diameter (ED) is presented as percentage of HL.
