Spiralaria serrata   (Macgillivray,  1869) (Bryozoan)
Organism information awaits expert curation
Class: Gymnolaemata

Size (Zooecium): Length 450 µ; breadth 210 µ.

Encrusting, unilaminar raised to form frills at certain portions of the colonies. Elongated, rectangular, distinct, moderately calcified zooecia arranged in longitudinal rows quincuncially. The definite and clearly serrated mural rims devoid of spines. Two tubercles present, placed at the distal lateral corners of the zooecia. Operculum membraniporine. Avicularia inter-zooecial with a moderately sized rectangular frontal region. The elongated, disto-laterally directed rostrum extends to the lateral sides of the zooecia, mandible elongated, resulting in width distally, with a curved tip. Ovicells endozooecial, sub-globular, non-porous and smooth.

In the areas of union of two portions of the colony some interesting features have been noticed. The development of the operculum is inhibited in one of the zooecia at the region of the union. The region of union can be distinguished easily, as this part will be raised from the substratum, and the zooecia of the two regions demarcated by vague thickening. It is noteworthy that the union of the two regions of the same colony can affect the orientation of the operculum and eventually the disposition of the polypide, and naturally budding has been inhibited resulting in a cessation of growth in that particular region.
