Color: Silvery, grayish or brownish above, opercle with dark bluish patches, dorsal dark, other fins hyaline to yellowish.

Dorsal profile from snout to dorsal strongly convex, ventral profile straight. Five pores below mandibular symphysis. Posterior nostril oval, anterior smaller and rounded. Opercle with two flat spines. Outer series of teeth in upper jaw enlarged and somewhat caninoid. Scales on opercles, cheeks, suborbitals and snout cycloid, rest ciliate. Lateral line arched upto middle of soft dorsal, sensory scales arborescent. Spinous dorsal deeply incised, its origin opposite to that of pectoral, origin of anal before middle of soft dorsal. Soft dorsal and anal rounded, pectorals falciform. Caudal rhomboidal. Sagitta: head of tadpole shaped impression obliquely truncate, the tail deepening into a hollow cone. Swim bladder hammer shaped with 14-16 pairs of arborescent appendages, the Ist pair entering the head.
