Color: Silvery, dark on back, dark spots on opercle, fins yellowish, border of dorsal grayish.

Head about 3.5, height 4 – 4.5 in length, eye 4-5 in head, 1.4 in snout. Snout without pores, about 3.5 in head. Anterior nostril rounded, posterior oval, mouth oblique, lower jaw prominent. Pre-opercle almost entire, operculum with two soft spines. One or two strong, curved, long canines on each side of mandibular symphysis. Scales cycloid in adult, ciliate in young. Even in adult scales on head, before ventrals and on lower half of tail more or less ciliate. Origin of anal opposite the 12th dorsal ray, its base nearly one-fifth of that soft dorsal, its spines slender and weak. Caudal wedge-shaped. Air-bladder with 25 lateral processes on either side.
