Size: Maximum 20 cm; common to 15 cm.

Color: Body light brown; fins hyaline except black border to anal fin.

Body compressed, deepest under dorsal fin origin, then tapering evenly to tail. Belly rounded in front of pelvic fins, becoming compressed and keeled towards vent, with 6 to 9 pre-pelvic and 7 to 11 post-pelvic scutes. Snout equal to eye. Maxilla almost or just reaching to edge of gill cover. Dorsal fin preceded by a small scute-like spine. Pectoral fin with 6 long filaments; the branched fin rays longer than those of pelvic fin. Pelvic fin with 7 rays. Gill rakers on lower arm of first arch 22 to 27, slender.
