Description
Size: 100 cm.

Color: Silvery, bluish above, 6-8 dark roundish spots above and along lateral line, fins grayish without black blotch on anterior part of soft dorsal, anal caudal lobes.

Compresses, oblong, height 3.5 to 4 in total length. Eye diameter 3.5 to 4 in length of head. It grows to over half a meter in length. Head 4.3-4.7, longer than high or as long as high, its rostro-frontal profile declivous in a straight line, somewhat concave in adult. Eye 4-5 in head, longer than, in adult about equal to obtuse snout. Jaws equal, the upper extending in young somewhat, in adult far behind eye. In upper jaw a series of enlarged conical teeth, followed by a band of villiform teeth, in lower jaw biserial teeth (see genus), usually a pair of symphysial oblique canines, villiform teeth in an ovate patch on vomer, in a pyriform band on palatines and a longitudinal band on pterygoids and tongue (see Fig. 56b). Scales roundish or ovate in young, broad lanceolate in adult, those of lower half less embedded, lateral line with a slight angular elevation soon after its commencement. Soft dorsal and anal anteriorly elevated, the height of the elevation in young twice, in adult less than twice lower than height of body, the last 8-10 rays semidetached, finlet-like. Pectorals acute, 1.5 in length of head, ventrals acute, slightly longer, caudal forked with acute lobes.
