Description
Size: 50-150 cm.

Color: Silvery with golden hue, five vertical bands in young.

Front dorsal and anal spines elongate when young but disappear with growth. Highest breadth 1 ¾ to 3 in total length. Body is much compressed laterally and rhomboidal when young and elongated with age. Head rather large, elevated 2.75-3.25 in length, its rostro-dorsal profile strongly ascending to dorsal fin, with an occipital gibbosity, the rostro-frontal profile steepest, with a concavity before eye. Eye small with rudimentary adipose eyelid, 3.5-4 in head. Height of praeorbital almost or quite twice diameter of eye. Snout somewhat pointed, gape of mouth oblique, chin prominent, maxillary reaching front border of eye or surpassing it slightly. Anterior part of lateral line curved, becoming straight below 10th dorsal ray, the straight part with more or less distinct keels, forming 8-12 weak scutes on caudal peduncle. Soft median fins with the majority of the rays of somewhat triangular form, their anterior part, in the dorsal the anterior seven or eight rays gradually elongated and with filiform termination, in the anal this is the case with the three or four anterior rays. Pectorals falciform, longer than the three or four anterior rays. Pectorals falciform, longer than the head. Ventrals in young with the two outer rays produced till caudal, in specimens of about 15 cm.
