Size: Maximum 80 cm; common to 30 cm.

Color: Dusky to silvery grey with the underside much paler. The posterior edges of the preopercle and the opercle are with a red line and the interior of the mouth and lips are scarlet.

It is a robust and moderately compressed fish and the body is covered with ctenoid scales arranged in about 55 series along the lateral line. The fins which have prominent spines include a single dorsal fin having 12 spines and 18-20 soft rays, an anal fin of 3 spines and 7-8 rays, a slightly emarginate caudal fin and typically short pectoral and pelvic fins. The lips of this fish are fleshy, becoming swollen with age and the chin has 6 pores but no median pit.
