Description
Size: 48 cm, larger than other shearwaters.

Color: Distinguished from other shearwater by pale head contrasting with dark brownish streak (perceivable only at close range) on hindcrown and nape. Upperparts greyish brown, underparts white contrassting with darker primaries, wingtips and carpal area. Bill horn-colored with darker tip, legs flesh-colored.

Habits: Follows fishing boats, makes shallow dives, normally in flocks with other seabirds, seizes fish and squids from the surface.

Sexes alike, a large shearwater with variable dark streaking on white head, dark tipped pale grey bill, white underparts and underwing-coverts and dark brown upperparts.
