Front cut into two lobes. Frontal lobes distinct and independent. Hand covered with squamiform markings, its outer surface costate.

Carapace densely covered with short hairs apart from ridges, beneath which surface is smooth apart from minute pitting. Front not strongly arched; 2 lobes, separated by small but distinct cleft; inner orbital lobes slightly arched and 0.6 breadth of frontal lobes. Chelipeds subequal; excepting in very small specimens, majority of surfaces of joints covered with large conspicuous squamiform tubercles separated by fine densely hirsute areas. Anterior border of arm with a series of approximately 5 stout spines, decreasing in size proximally. Outer surface of wrist bears 3 low stout spines, often blunted to tubercles. Hand bearing 3 large spines on upper surface, 4th reduced to blunt tubercle. Merus of fifth leg short and smooth posteriorly, except for large stout spine. Posterior border of propodus without spines, but usual border of long stout hairs.

This species is an active swimmer near the bottom, and attempts to escape capture by swimming rather than burrowing.
