Tree palm-like much branched, stemless, sub erect supported by aerial roots. Straight stilt root like roots. Leaves are glaucous, green 1-2 m long sword shape with spiny margin, midrib caudate-acuminate.

Male spadix numerous, sub-sessile, cylindric spikes enclosed in long white fragrant membranous spathe. Female spadix solitary, carpel confluents, stigma short, reniform, yellow, staminodes absent. Fruits are pineapple like, orange when ripens.

Flowering and fruiting from March – November (West Bengal) and April – September (Andhra Pradesh).

(Leaves are used for making white fibre, cordage, matting and sacks. Tender floral leaves are edible. Also the leaves are believed to be valuable in treating leprosy, small pox, scabies and diseases of heart and brain.)
