Shrubs or small trees, 3-10 m tall, branches stiff and horizontal, ending in sharp spines. Leaves 6-9 cm long, crowded at nodes of the spinous branchlets; leaflets 9 - 11, alternate, each 1-2 X 0.5­-1 cm, elliptic-ovate, obtuse or emarginate at apex, cuneate at base. Flowers 2-3 mm across, purplish-white in short dense corymbose clusters in the leaf axils. Pods flat, 2.5-3 cm long, kidney shaped, brownish, 1-2 seeded.

Flowering and fruiting during May­-November, July-September (West Bengal, Orissa), April-October (Andhra Pradesh).

The species is identified in the field from its branchlets ending into sharp spines and kidney shaped pods.
