Description
Color: Pale yellowish brown to generally brownish purple. Male plant yellowish red, female plant purple or purplish red. Red colour results from the dominance of the pigments phycoerythrin and phycocyanin; this masks the other pigments, chlorophyll a (no chlorophyll b), beta-caratene and a number of unique xanthophylls.

Plants gregarious, 0.5 - 2.0 µm long, 20 - 200 micron diameter thicker, the filaments broadly attached, softly slippery, the filaments at first slightly tapered towards the base, the cells with single, radially lobes chromatophores; uniseriate, the segments equal to the diameter or to 0.25 - 0.33 as long, becoming quaternetely and then more extensively radially divided, resulting in thick, somewhat torulose and constricted filaments.

Dioecious; spermatangiophores and carpogonia borne separately on the upper part of male and female plants. Each spermatangiophore with 8-16 spermatangia on surface view and each carpogonium with 4 carpospores. vegetative reproduction is rare; asexual reproduction is effected by the formation of various kinds of spores; Sexual reproduction is unique in this group due to their passive, non flagellated sperm cells (spermatia).
