Size: Maximum 40 cm; common 30 cm

Max. weight reported: 140 g

Color: Upper surface of the body blue green while flanks are silvery. Edge of dorsal fin faintly dark, pectoral fins hyaline but tips slightly dark; margins of anal and caudal fins dusky, remaining part hyaline.

Body slender and compressed. Its depth is about 1/3rd of standard length, deepest a little anterior to dorsal fin origin. Abdomen is keeled. Belly with usually 24 to 26 pre-pelvic, 10 to 15 post-pelvic, total 34 to 42 scutes. Head length is about 1/4th of standard length. Eye large, lower jaw projecting. A single row of teeth is present in both jaws. Pseudobranch present, exposed. 19 to 25 gill rakers are present on lower arm of 1st arch. Dorsal fin usually with 14 or 15 branched rays, its origin at about midpoint of body or a little behind. Anal fin with 40 to 49 branched rays, its origin a little behind dorsal fin base. Pelvic fins small, no axillary scale. Swim bladder with single long post-coelomic extension passing back down right side of body above anal fin base. Dorsal spines (total): 0 - 0; Anal spines: 0; Anal soft rays: 43 – 53.
