Description
Size: Maximum 21 cm; common to 15 cm.

Color: Flanks and belly with golden or pearly spots (light organs) in rows below scales, also along isthmus, edge of lower jaw, on cheek and gill cover.

Body tapering, belly rounded before pelvic fins, with 5 or 6 (rarely 4) + 7 to 9 = 12 to 15 keeled scutes from just behind pectoral fin base to anus. Anal fin is long (35-116 rays),confluent with a caudal fin. Maxilla short, tip pointed, reaching to or just beyond gill opening. Pectoral fin with 6 long filaments and 9 to 11 (rarely 8) branched fin rays. Mouth is oblique.
Maxillary dilated, opposite the mandibular joint, tapering behind and reaching about the hindborder of the suboperculum, with small teeth along the whole of its ventral border. Dorsal more or less than twice as near to snout as to caudal. Length of anal 1½ – 1 4/5 in length of body. Origin of ventrals opposite to origin of dorsal, about midway between anal and suboperculum, 2-3 in head. Pectorals with the six upper rays filiform and produced to about the middle of the length of the fish. Scales thin, deciduous, with anastomosing lines, 12-14 keeled spiniferous abdominal scutes, 4-6 of which anterior to the ventrals. About 24 gillrakers, with distinct spines at the innerside, three times as long as branchial filaments, nearly as long as eye.

Dioecious, external fertilization, nonguarders, open water/substratum egg scatterers. Breeding season is perhaps extended.
