Description
Size: 35 cm.

Color: Ground color silvery to deep grey with blackish oblique bands running up and hind wards along the center of each row of scales of trunk and tail, Fainter in young, fins deep black, head glossed with purple.

Oblong, rostro-dorsal profile strongly ascending in nearly straight line to dorsal, thence much more convex than ventral, height about equal to length of head, 3.1 to 3.5 in length. Eye 4.5 to six in head, situated in anterior half of head and above horizontal through commencement of gape o mouth, equal to or 1/3 shorter than slightly convex inter orbital space and 1 or 2 diameters from end of little inflated prominent snout, which has three open pores across its base and five more along its free border, mesially lobate with shallow lateral incision. Mouth nearly horizontal, inferior, upper jaw the longest, reaching to below hind border of pupil, maxillary concealed with distal rounded expansion, shorter than eye, mandibulary included with five pores under symphysis. Preopercle with rounded angle, crenulate, opercle with two blunt spines. Teeth in villi form bands and a superior outer row of distant enlarged ones of moderate size and number. Scales ctenoid except below eyes, on cheeks and opercles where they are cycloid, skin of snout velvety, base of soft dorsal thickly scaled, lateral line arched to above end of anal, sensory tubes with short fan-shaped branched, posteriorly bifid. Dorsal only superficially notched, the four last spines of about equal height and about half height of the third, the longest, being 1/3 higher than the rays, and equal to half or a third height of body, spines rigid, depressible in a groove. Base of spinous dorsal more than twice in soft dorsal, which even as anal is rounded, second anal spine long and robust, about half length of head. Anal more than thrice in length of soft dorsal, originating opposite 8 to 10. dorsal ray. Pectorals rounded, longer than postorbital part of head, ventrals with first ray filamentous. Caudal rounded to slightly rhomboidal, least height of its peduncle nearly twice eye.
